| Pooja Bar | |
| Pooja Bar Dear Friends, this is neither about a Girl called Pooja, nor about a Bar, nor about a bargirl called Pooja.I mean exactly as I have titled this. And no, I did not fall in love with a Rakhee Sawant or Mallika Sherawat kind in the Pooja Bar.Read on. We started to construct our Bunglow in 83, and it took two years to shift in it.We were very excited , as no one in our 7 generations had ever made their own house brick by brick. We consulted half a dozen architects, they took the signing amounts, like the film stars and gave us the run for our money, and ultimately disappeared with the advance. Some gave us the designs, which were lousy.Ultimately we got one chap, who was not that popular, but gave us what we wanted. After we shifted in, we realized we had forgotton something.Mom said , “ Where is the Pooja Room “. Well we realized too late that a Pooja room is a must to please the Gods, otherwise calamities will occur.Well the Gods were kind to me and Harsha, maybe they were in a good mood, and spared us the ordeal. Thanks Boss. My Brother said, “ Where is the Bar “. That too I forgot, a must in my planning of things, but somehow The Pooja Room and the Bar, both got left out.Next house If I make these two will be a must. Now how to please the Gods, we pray once a year , at Diwali, that’s all.The other 364 days God comes to me in my sleep, asking for my welfare, I told him I am sorry I forget to place him, and he said “ Kamal I am in your heart, where no one can see me, good u did not make a Tamasha of me by keeping my statues of Marble, and praying loudly and disturbing my sleep., Like a lunantic. You just remember me, and I will be there, don’t make a spectacle of me.” So nice of the boss really. But anyway I had to keep some Gods, so at the entrance of my front door, in the verandah, we have kept Ganeshji or marble above the door, andit is still there after all these years. It is so high, over 8 feet I have never had the chance to go up and say Hi to Ganeshji. He is inside the hollow of the wall, and Birds over the years, specially sparrows come andlay their eggs at his feet, covering him with grass. And hundreds of deliveries have taken place at Ganeshji’s Feet. Well we made a small wodden stand , stuck to the wall where we have put up a few framed pictures of Gods. But there are so many Gods, and so little space, how does onemanage to please all gods eh ! But I went around the market, and some ingenious printers, have managed to put hundreds of Gods in one Picture. It is as though the gods are posing as a Group photo, like we do at the Weddings on the Stage.Somebody is sitting , some are standing, somebody is in somebody’s lap, and so on, and I paid 10/- for that wonderful picture, and I burn 4 aggarbattis to the bosses first thing when i go to office, say my thanks and get on with work. And when I want something from the Lord, I burn two more aggarbattis, well after all thisis a materialistic world isn’t it, after all in life too we have topay something under the table, to get our work done faster, so I do it the aggarbatti way.And he listens really. My God is reasonable. For the Bar, well I have a cabinet in the Drawing Room, where a small portion I stock my Liquor Bottles, a make do arrangement really.I have a very wide collection of liquors, ranging from all the imported Brands, the Vodkas,Scotch,Wines, you name it I have it, couresy my brothers and NRI cousins, they know what pleases me.But I hardly drink that, just my poor Indian Royal Stag, and wait for someone worthy to come home, so I too can have the Amrit called Black Label with them. But I need not worry about missing the Pooja Room and the Bar.Previously when we had to show our home to any newcomer, we used to show the Pooja Rooms, these days the trend is to show the guests the Bathrooms, which I did not forget to construct, so that makes up for the lapses of the past. And the Bathrooms are now 25 years old and due for renovations totally.Harsha has been after me, and so has Sita, well I will do it this year itself. But the bathrooms are still functional, and I have kind of got used to them.I feel it is a waste of good hard earned money, to spend on new Bathrooms, where even if u buy a Japanese 1 lakh Kamot, or the pot as u call it, u will only shit, and nothing else. But who is to explain this to my family. And since I will spend money to renovate the bathrooms I must have them inaugurated by someone, but cutting the ribbon and using the pot first, and we will stand and clap as is the custom these days . But I cant find anyone to inaugurate them.Who will do that among u, my friends ! I will send u a AC Train Ticket, everything paid for, and I will give u a copyof the photographs too which we will take out at the inauguration.Anyone Ready ! KAMAL MAHTANI

| Counting Sheep |
| I count sleep, the ability to hit the bed and doze off for upwards of seven hours as one of my foremost blessings. And I can do this on a train or bus, in a new or old environment, head facing east or west. May be I counted my blessings too soon. There is nothing more blissful than a dreamless sleep. You are fresh next morning ready to tilt your a...

| Five hundred years of progress packed into a sack of flour.By J. Bradford DeLong, Wired MagHere's some food for thought.A smart shopper can buy a 5-pound bag of Gold Medal flour for 69 cents. That's enough to feed three people for a day - 7,500 easy-to-digest, relatively nutritious, and potentially tasty calories. All for less than 0.7 percent of a...
